I am sharing some ideas for interactive notebooks when teaching students about earthquakes.
For a fun demonstration of an earthquake:
1. Make a pan of jello.
2. Explain that the jello represents the ground which moves during an earthquake. Tap the container to show how the "ground" moves.
3. Ask students to predict what will happen to building sitting on the ground during an earthquake.
4. Have students construct buildings out of toothpicks and marshmallows or stack sugar cubes. Leave this part of the activity kind of open ended so that students can discover that some designs are more stable in an earthquake than others.
5. Tap the side of the container and move it from side to side a little to demonstrate an earthquake. Record results.
