Interactive Notebooks for Critical Thinking

If we teach children everything we know, their knowledge is limited to ours.  If we teach children to think, their knowledge is limitless.  Being able to solve problems one encounters in life depends on being able to think critically.  Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication.

Interactive notebooks are a great tool for engaging students in critical thinking!

In the following examples students did a hands-on experiment and then reflected critically on what they had learned about animal adaptions.

In the following example students completed a STEM challenge and then analyzed their ideas.

In the following lesson students dissected and analyzed the placement and number of seeds in various fruit.

In the following example students combined materials to blow up a balloon and analyze what happened in the process.

Another great example of critical thinking in an interactive notebook.

Interactive notebooks are a great tool to have students experience and practice critical thinking skills.  The can record data, analyze and reflect on it, make new connections ask questions and form conclusions.
