You will need these materials: lemons, food coloring, plastic knife, baking soda, dawn dish soap and a pan or plate.
First, cut the lemon on both sides so that it will sit up on the plate.
Set lemon on plate. Add a few drops of food coloring. And then a few drops of dawn dish soap. (Not too much)
Take the plastic knife and poke quite a few holes into the lemon. You want the juice to come to the surface.
Next, sprinkle baking soda on the lemon.
Poke again with the knife and add more lemon juice from the end of the lemon you cut off.
Now observe the reaction.
This is really fun and easy to do. Kids will love the variety of colors.
The Science: Baking soda is a base it reacts with the citric acid in the lemon. The dish soap and food coloring are not required for the reaction, but they make it foamy and colorful.
