Analyzing the Fossil Record Online Unit NGSS MS-LS4-1 and Utah SEEd 7.5.2

Patterns In The Fossil Record Provide Evidence That The Earth's Landscape and Species Have Changed Over Time    Are you looking for an independent science unit for your middle school students to do online? This unit on Analyzing the Fossil Record to look for Patterns to tell us about changes to the Earth's landscape over time.  This is a great independent online unit for Middle School NGSS.

Patterns in the Fossil Record for Middle School Science
This resource is an online middle school science unit on analyzing the fossil record and looking at patterns that could tell us about the history of life on Earth. This resource is entirely on Google. The slides have interactive components that the students can type right on and also have drag and drop activities and videos to watch.  Students will read informational text passages about the fossil record and will answer questions. The unit ends with a quiz (editable) in google forms

Students will read text passages in Google Slides and respond by typing right on the slide.
Patterns in the Fossil Record
Fossil of an Ammonite
This resource is aligned completely with NGSS  MS-LS4-1. Analyze and interpret data for patterns in the fossil record that document the existence, diversity, extinction, and change of life forms throughout the history of life on Earth under the assumption that natural laws operate today as in the past. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on finding patterns of changes in the level of complexity of anatomical structures in organisms and the chronological order of fossil appearance in the rock layers.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include the names of individual species or geological eras in the fossil record.]

And Utah SEEd Standard 7.5.2 Analyze and interpret data for patterns in the fossil record that document the existence, diversity, extinction, and change of life forms throughout the history of life on Earth, under the assumption that natural laws operate today as in the past. (LS4.A, ESS2.E)

Students will also engage in some interactive and Drag and Drop Slides.

Interactive Drag and Drop slides for google Classroom

This resource also includes the use of phenomena, videos, a suggested schedule, and directions.  The unit ends with a Google Form Quiz that is self-grading and editable.

Students will learn about different types of fossils and about the geologic column. they will learn about strata, stratigraphy, and how fossils are formed.
